Practical Application of the Book of Psalm 2

What Is the Book of Psalm About?

As a revelatory book, the book of Psalm reveals different levels of truth about God, the creation of the world, the fall of man, the salvation of humanity, and the coronation of Jesus Christ. However, as a prophetic book, it explicitly tells the history of the children of Israel and God’s covenant promises to them in the form of poetry and music. As a musical book, the book of Psalm comprises largely different types of songs, including Songs of Thanksgiving, Confidence in God’s ability, Despair, Praise, Goodness of God, and Songs of lamentations. In summary, the book of Psalm is a book of the bible that offers expressions of praise and prayer that have been found, over the generations, to be potent regardless of the times or situation.

Authors of the Book of Psalm?

Usually, most people often have the preconceived notion that king David entirely wrote the book of psalms. However, there are more than five authors, making it the only book of the Bible with the most authors. The following are the authors who contributed to the book of psalms.

  1. King David: He wrote about seventy-five chapters, and most of his writings were composed of hymns that express emotion to God or about God and communicate different feelings or thoughts regarding his situation. King David wrote the following chapters in the book of Psalm 2—9; 11—32; 34—41; 51—65; 68—70; 86; 95; 101; 103; 108—110; 122; 124; 131; 133; 138—145.
  2. King Solomon: The son of King David also contributed to the book of Psalm with only two chapters. He is the author of Psalms 72 and 127, which expresses the dominion of God.
  3. Moses: The man of God Moses also contributed to the writing of the book of Psalm. He wrote only one chapter, which is Psalm 90, which was a prayer for the Israelites.
  4. Asaph and Family: Asaph is not just an ordinary singer in the temple of God. Instead, he is regarded as the chief Levite singer and seer in David’s court. It is important to note that Asaph and his descendants became crucial figures as temple singers and skilled poets who wrote twelve chapters in the book of Psalm (50; 73—83).
  5. The Sons of Korah: In Number 16, Korah, a prominent figure, earned a reputation of infamy as he led a revolt against Moses and Aaron. Eventually, the Lord caused the earth to swallow him up and killed his followers. However, the sons of Korah took a different pathway as they contributed eleven chapters (42; 44—49; 84—85; 87—88) to the book of Psalm. Their Psalm expresses gratitude and humility to God.
  6. Heman the Ezrahite: He is most likely considered one of the sons of Korah. Also, Heman is considered a Levite in Israel who served during the period of King Solomon. He is an influential man due to his role in the temple as a songwriter, seer, and poet. He wrote chapter 88 of the book of Psalm.

About 48 chapters of Psalms were anonymous because the book’s author was not mentioned. These are the authors of the book of Psalm that were mentioned outrightly. However, there are still other contributors that were not mentioned in person.

An in-depth study of the psalms’ authorship and subject matter shows that they were written over several centuries. However, the prayers, songs, prophetic declarations, and advice of these many songwriters and authors continue to change lives and encourage believers to worship God.

Practical Application of the Book of Psalm

Every book of the Bible has practical application in the believer’s daily living. However, the book of Psalm plays a very crucial role in the believer’s life. Here are some of the highlighted practical applications of the book of Psalm;

  • A Book for Singing: The bible greatly recommends that believers should speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Therefore, the book of Psalm is important for fulfilling the instruction of God as it contains numerous worship songs.
  • A Book for Prayer: The book of Psalm contains numerous prayer points for believers. Due to the several circumstances that the different authors pass through, you will be better equipped on how they prayed and got their miracle.
  • A Book Experience: The book of Psalm thoroughly reveals the different experiences people go through and how to overcome them. Some of the human emotions that easily overwhelmed individuals, such as depression, anger, frustration, fear, and insecurity, were expressed and overcame.

The book of Psalm teaches believers that God is the same Lord that spoke and wrote through the various authors. However, believers’ circumstances differ, and they respond to God differently, depending on their condition. Praise be to the wonderful God we serve, the psalmist exclaims, a God who sits high beyond our human understanding yet is still close enough to reach out and walk beside us as we journey through life.

In conclusion, the book of Psalm is a book that teaches us that we can bring all our feelings to God.
