Walking with the Holy Spirit (Part Three): The Role of the Holy Spirit in the Life of the Believer

In the home, everyone has a role to perform. For example, the father is the home’s protector, provider, and visionary. At the same time, the mother ensures that food and other basic things necessary for the home are provided. This is the same in the organogram structure of the Godhead. Everyone has a role, including the Holy Spirit. Most times, believers are oblivious of the role of the Holy Spirit in their lives. That is why they live in fear and can not maximize the untapped power inside of them. However, in this article, you shall be learning the role of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s life.

The believer has been given the promise of the father – The Holy Spirit. He is the third person in the Trinity (Godhead). One of the reasons people can not really articulate His role is that they can not see him. However, the Holy Spirit plays a major role in the life of the believer – It is through the Holy Spirit, we all came into the fold; it is also through him we can stand to serve effectively as priests in these last days.

Where is the Holy Spirit?

This is one of the most common questions that believers ask regarding the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit is not in heaven but on earth in the believer’s heart (Acts 2:1-13). So as a believer, you should not be confused in any way because the bible says, “However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you” (Romans 8:9).

This scripture clearly explains that every believer has the Holy Spirit inside them. This is one of the reasons why Jesus said that it is expedient He goes to the father – because the Holy Spirit to the believer is the same as Jesus Christ with His disciples. Our everlasting status as God’s children is confirmed, certified, and assured by the presence of the Holy Spirit in our hearts after we have been rescued and accepted into His family.

The Role of the Holy Spirit

As compensation for Jesus’s absence, the Holy Spirit was given by the father to carry out the duties that Jesus would have carried out for us if He had stayed here. So, here are some of the roles of the Holy Spirit;

Revealer of Truth:

It is important to note that believers can understand and interpret God’s Word because of the Holy Spirit. Jesus told His disciples that “when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit illuminates the believer’s mind to grasp the Rhema and build doctrine from scripture. It is the duty of the Holy Spirit to demonstrate who Jesus is and what He claimed about (John 15:26).

Comforter and Counsellor in Time of Distress:

Another role of the Holy Spirit is that He is our paraclete – this means that the Spirit is our comforter and counselor. There are times when we are faced with certain troubles in our hearts. At those times, the Holy Spirit is our comforter to comfort us in any sorrow or grief. Jesus says, “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you” (John 14:16). As a counselor, the Holy Spirit is there to counsel us concerning any situation.

Advocate and Intercessor:

An advocate is someone who is qualified to plead the cause of another. The Holy Spirit prays through us to the father. He is the person who is able to tell the father what the believer needs accurately. That is why He gave the believer a prayer language (praying in the Holy Ghost). The bible says, “Likewise, the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with” (Romans 8:26). So, the Holy Spirit not only intercedes for us when we are weak, but He also intercedes through us.

The Holy Spirit gives Gifts:

The Holy Spirit came down from heaven with several gifts, some of which are mentioned expressly in scripture. First Corinthians 12 discusses the spiritual gifts Christians of the early church have received. It is important to note that these gifts are not for showmanship or for self-gratification. But so that the believer might be His ambassadors in the world, displaying His grace and honouring Him. Some of the spiritual gifts include wisdom, knowledge, power, etc. (1 Corinthians 12:7-11).

The Holy Spirit Develop Character in the Believer (Fruit of the Spirit):

Every tree must produce according to its kind. So, the Holy Spirit also functions as a fruit-producer in the believer’s lives. Although, this is not something that will be developed instantly, as it will take time for the believer to accept the propositions of the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit dwells in your heart, He begins the work of harvesting His fruit in our lives—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

The Holy Spirit Convicts of Sin:

One of the ways to know the true state of your standing with God is if you commit a particular sin and your is heart pricked. The Holy Spirit convicts not only believers of sin but also unbelievers who are yet to be saved. His role is also to correct the believer about certain harmful practices to their spiritual life. The bible says, “And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment” (John 16:8).

The Holy Spirit Reveals things to come:

Another role of the Holy Spirit is that He reveals the father’s heart to believers. This is because it is the Spirit that searches the deep things of God and reveals them in the heart of the believer. The bible says, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come” (John 16:13).

Other roles of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer are;

  • The Holy Spirit Is a Seal in the Lives of Believers
  • The Holy Spirit regenerates and saves believers.
  • The Holy Spirit Sanctifies Believers
  • The Holy Spirit quickens Believers
  • The Holy Spirit Is a Source of Revelation, Wisdom, and Power

In conclusion, knowing the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer empowers them to live a fulfilling life here on earth. Once the knowledge that the Holy Spirit of God performs all these miraculous functions has stuck inside of you, then you will begin to live the God kind of life.
