As Christian, most people are unaware of their identity in Christ, and they often confuse their former lifestyle with their current level in Christ Jesus. However, your true identity is found in Christ. The moment you accept him into your life as your Lord and Savior, you are now one with Christ. In this article, you shall be learning about your new identity in Christ and how to function properly.
What is Identity?
Identity, in simple terms, means certain qualities, mindset, personality, beliefs, looks/appearance that a person possesses or distinguishes someone. Identity is so crucial that when people enter a new environment, they easily identify with people with certain qualities. The consciousness of our authority and dominion in Christ Jesus aids us in recognizing who we are as believers in Christ.
The moment we submit to Jesus’s authority, we realize our true selves in Christ. Our relationship with Christ defines our identity. The only thing that defines you is your connection with Jesus Christ, not your academic achievement, financial prosperity, or social position. Many people, especially those who have a personal relationship with God, do great things in life. DANIEL expressed his thoughts as follows: “But the people who know their God shall be strong and carry out great exploits” (Dan.11: 32).
Who Am I in Christ?
At no point should you take Satan’s version of your identity. The only thing that matters is what God says about you and what the Bible says about you. Don’t allow anybody or anything, not even yourself, to define who you are or what you stand for. To become a Christian, you must first embrace the gift of a new self-identity, which is given to you by God.
We do not lose our authentic selves in Jesus, but rather, we are transformed into our actual selves alone through Jesus. In Jesus Christ, we not only have the certainty of everlasting life, but we also have the downpayment of it, which the Holy Spirit provides as he lives in us and acts inside us right now. As a result, his happiness, love, tranquility, and strength are all transferred to us.
Nothing can compare to the depth and breadth of Christ’s relationship with us. Nobody has a more comprehensive theological perspective or has achieved a higher degree of abstraction than he has. We have been given a new identity in Christ and are now considered members of God’s family. It is getting increasingly difficult for us to understand the cultures and languages of people on our planet. As a result of our rebirth, we have a new existence on a new planet.
Sonship in Christ:
You think and act differently if you know who you are in Jesus Christ. When you don’t know who you are in Christ, your thoughts and actions will be affected. It was a reminder to Galatians in Gal.4: 1-7 from Paul that they were no longer slaves, but rather sons of God in Christ Jesus.
The moment you place your faith in Jesus Christ, you are converted from being a slave to being God’s son and heir. When it comes to this “identity-shift,” the Holy Spirit, also known as the “Spirit of sonship,” plays a significant role. In spite of their confidence in the Almighty, many Christians have reservations about following Christ.
However, being adopted into God’s family gives you all the privileges and responsibilities that come with the role of son or daughter in the family. In at least four crucial areas of your life, you will experience tremendous upheaval:
- Identity: According to the Bible, you used to be ordinary people, but now you are God’s people (1 Peter 2:10). After becoming a child of God, you may consider yourself to be a part of God’s extended family. Now that you have been adopted as a child of God, this fact defines your identity.
- Status: Before your salvation, you were regarded as an enslaved person, and you had no rights or advantages as an enslaved person (Eph. 2:1-2). Now that you have been designated as a son of God, you are entitled to all of the perks and advantages that go along with that designation.
- Position: You were the target of God’s wrath because you were a slave to sin while on earth as a human being (Eph. 2:3). You have been reconciled to God and made holy by faith in Jesus Christ to stand before Him without fear of being accused of any wrongdoing (Col. 1:18-19). I have been raised from the dead by the power of Christ (Eph. 2:5).
- Relationship: The concern and dread of God consumed your life before conversion, but now that you are a child of God, you have been brought into the most intimate and close relationship with Him possible. You are a man with a son’s soul rather than only having a son’s identity, status, and position! And one technique of communicating this transformation in your relationship is your prayer language.
As God’s son, your prayer language is now exactly the same as that of God’s only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, who is also your spiritual Father. ‘Abba, Father!’ Jesus said as he prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane (Mark 14:36). “Abba, Father” has become the universal cry of God’s children, thanks to the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit.
A link between Christians and God is analogous to Christ’s relationship with the Father. Abba is a word that signifies “father” or “daddy” in the Aramaic language. It is a prayer language infused with a great deal of affection, a prayer that can be felt and experienced on a deep level.
What Does My Identity In Christ Mean?
Your new identity should be your first inquiry when you give your life to Christ. Your identity in Christ means you’ve been adopted into God’s family and become his kid, and you are no longer an orphan because of your sin. Jesus’ death on the cross redeemed us from our sins and allowed us to return to our Father.
You’re a daughter of the King the instant you own your sin. “Who am I in Christ?” You are now the King’s daughter. Your new identity in Christ has set you free. The cross of Jesus loosed the chains of sin for all of us. We are free of sin’s servitude!
That everything that used to hold you back is now powerless over you! After accepting Christ as your personal Savior, you may live a free life. “Who am I in Christ?” “Christ,” I say. You are finally free of sin’s slavery. This is true even if you don’t feel it. Your faith will grow as you learn more about Christ and grow closer to Him. Timing will help him believe what he says about you.
